Uganda Hosts Africa’s Top Health Regulators at the 27th AMCOA Annual Scientific Conference

Uganda is at the center of Africa’s healthcare transformation this week, as it proudly hosts the 27th Annual Scientific Conference and Annual General Meeting of the Association of Medical Councils of Africa (AMCOA) from July 28–31, 2025, at the Speke Resort and Convention Centre in Munyonyo, Kampala.

Organized by the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council (UMDPC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the high-level gathering has drawn regulators, healthcare professionals, policymakers, and innovators from across the continent.

A New Era in Healthcare Regulation

This year’s theme, “Regulator 2.0: The Balanced Approach,” reflects the urgent need to adapt to rapidly evolving healthcare landscapes while maintaining ethical and professional standards. It’s about finding the sweet spot between innovation and accountability, patient safety and practitioner welfare, digital tools and human-centered care.

“This conference is more than a meeting—it’s a milestone,” said Assoc. Prof. Joel Okullo, President of AMCOA and Chair of UMDPC. “We’re honored to host it in Uganda and shape a stronger, smarter regulatory environment for African healthcare.”

Official Opening by Uganda’s Health Leaders

The event will officially opened today by Hon. Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero, Uganda’s Minister for Health, with Hon. Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa serving as Guest of Honour. Their presence highlights Uganda’s commitment to elevating health regulation as a pillar of national development and regional leadership.

What to Expect: Insight, Innovation & Impact

Over four days, attendees will dive into issues that cut across all health systems on the continent:

  • Medical education and training reform
  • Ethical practice in a tech-driven world
  • Digital integration in healthcare systems
  • Health worker welfare and burnout prevention

The program includes keynote addresses, panel discussions, hands-on workshops, and networking sessions—all set against the breathtaking backdrop of Lake Victoria.

Building Bridges Across Borders

AMCOA plays a vital role in promoting excellence in healthcare regulation across Africa by supporting collaboration, harmonizing standards, and fostering mutual recognition of medical qualifications. This year’s gathering is not just a conference—it’s a catalyst for cross-border unity and shared progress.
