The Ministry of Health has unveiled a new initiative to integrate eye care services into Uganda’s existing community health platforms, aiming to expand access to basic eye health interventions for millions of underserved Ugandans.
Announcing the plan, Dr. Charles Olaro, Director General of Health Services at the Ministry of Health, said the government is partnering with the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) and Evidence Action to strengthen primary eye care across the country.
As part of the rollout, over 50,000 reading glasses will be distributed to communities where visual impairment, particularly among the elderly, is most prevalent. The distribution will be coordinated through community health workers and local health facilities to ensure broad coverage and equitable access.
“Eye health remains a neglected area within our primary healthcare system, yet it affects productivity, education, and overall well-being,” Dr. Olaro stated. “By bringing eye care services closer to the people—especially in rural and low-income areas—we are taking a major step toward inclusive and accessible healthcare for all.”
The initiative comes in response to rising cases of preventable and correctable vision loss, with many individuals unable to afford or access basic services like eye examinations and reading glasses. According to health officials, uncorrected presbyopia—a condition causing difficulty in seeing close objects—is one of the most common visual challenges facing adults over 40.
In addition to distributing glasses, the Ministry plans to build the capacity of community health workers to perform basic vision screenings and refer complex cases to health facilities for further care. Educational campaigns on eye health will also be included in routine community outreach activities.
Representatives from CHAI and Evidence Action welcomed the partnership, noting its potential to strengthen the national health system and improve quality of life for thousands of Ugandans.
This effort aligns with the broader Universal Health Coverage goals and Uganda’s commitment to strengthening primary healthcare by making it more inclusive and responsive to the needs of all citizens.
