Uganda confirms Sudan Ebola Virus Disease Outbreak in Kampala

The Government of Uganda through the Ministry of Health- Uganda has confirmed the outbreak of the Sudan Ebola Virus Disease in the capital Kampala.

Ministry of Health- Uganda Permanent Secretary Dr Diana Atwine confirmed the news at a press conference held January 30, 2025 at the ministry headquarters in Kampala.

A confirmed case is of a 32-year old nurse, an employee of Mulago National Referral Hospital who had at first presented fever-like symptoms and had sought treatment from several health facilities including Mulago National Referral Hospital.

“The confirmed case, designated as the index case, is a 32-year-old male nurse, an employee of Mulago National Referral Hospital who initially developed fever-like symptoms and sought treatment at multiple health facilities, including Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala, Saidina Abubakar Islamic Hospital in Matugga in Wakiso District, and Mbale Regional Referral Hospital in Mbale City, as well as from a traditional healer,” the ministry says in a statement released on January 30, 2025.

The ministry adds: “The patient presented with a five-day history of high fever, chest pain, and difficulty in breathing, which later progressed to unexplained bleeding from multiple body sites. The patient experienced multi-organ failure and succumbed to the illness at Mulago National Referral Hospital on 29th January 2025. Post-mortem samples confirmed Sudan Ebola Virus Disease.”

No other patient or health worker at the hospital has presented the symptoms.

Ebola is a deadly disease caused by a virus. Symptoms often start with Sudden onset fever
 Fatigue
 Chest pain
 Diarrhea
 Vomiting
 Unexplained bleeding
 Yellowing of the eyes
 Restlessness
 Headache

Late symptoms include bleeding, organ failure, often resulting in death.
